What does a Chief AI Officer do in an energy marketing firm?
A Chief AI Officer in an energy marketing firm sets the AI strategy, designs the systems the client work runs on and governs how AI is used. At Project 54 the role covers content engines, sales and pipeline automation, the operating stack, delivery quality and client reporting.
- 01The role is defined by the systems it designs, not by the models it buys.
- 02Governance is half the job: what AI may touch, what it may claim and who approves it.
- 03In energy, accuracy for technical buyers matters more than volume.
Why does a marketing firm need a Chief AI Officer?
A marketing firm that runs its client work on AI needs one person accountable for how that AI is used. Without that person, tools spread across the team, each with its own habits, and nobody can say which output was checked, which source it came from or who approved it.
Public bodies reached the same conclusion. United States federal guidance issued in April 2025 requires each agency to retain a Chief AI Officer, accountable for promoting AI use and managing its risks. A firm that sells AI run marketing faces the same two duties on a smaller scale: use it well, and stop it doing harm.
What does the role cover at Project 54?
Project 54 installs AI run marketing and sales systems for energy companies and the industrial suppliers that serve them. As its Chief AI Officer, Michael S.U. Hudson sets the AI strategy and designs the systems the client work runs on: content engines, sales and pipeline automation, and the operating stack behind them.
He chooses the models and the architecture, writes the operating method the delivery team works to and directs that team. He owns delivery quality and client reporting. Engagements range from a two week market entry audit to a growth system installed and operated for a minimum of six months.
What does governance mean in practice?
Governance is a written set of rules that every person and every automation follows. At Project 54, AI never handles passwords, keys or secrets, which sit in a secure vault. No client personal data is kept in logs. Automations that read client mailboxes are read only, so nothing in a client inbox changes. Every counterparty is screened against sanctions lists before engagement, and clients are named only with written approval.
Governance also covers what AI may claim. For one industrial client, an operating standard binds AI output to written procedures and measurement standards. A two stage prompt system includes hallucination controls, and a four tier evidence label marks how well each claim is supported. That standard caught AI generated fiction in the client’s own knowledge base, including invented partnerships and case studies, and quarantined it before it reached a public channel.
Why is energy different?
Energy buyers are engineers, procurement teams and executives with sales cycles of one to two years. A wrong specification or an invented partnership does more damage than silence. Many companies in the sector also operate in politically sensitive markets, where every public statement is approved at the top.
Under those conditions, volume is easy and accuracy is hard. The Chief AI Officer’s task is to make AI output accurate enough for technical buyers and steady enough to publish every week, with a clear trail from each claim to its source.
How is the role measured?
The role is measured by the client’s results and by the reliability of the system that produced them. For one oil and gas services client, the company’s LinkedIn audience grew about 21 times between April 2022 and October 2026 with no paid media, according to Hootsuite reports and LinkedIn Page Analytics. The same engagement exposed 948 false analytics leads in February 2026, so that reporting could be trusted again.
Those results belong to a team. The Chief AI Officer sets the targets, designs the system, directs the team and owns the outcome.
